The Plunge

“The plunge is not sudden, for the habit of centuries is strong, built into the revered documents and the surviving institutions. Marriage, the ideal of love, respect for other persons, for the law, for work, for reason, the self-limitation on human autonomy, all remain. But cut off from the theological and moral foundations, these moral principles are gradually seen to be hanging in midair. People who are interested in ideas—the intellectuals—see this first. Perhaps what is now happening is that large numbers of people are realizing they believe in nothing fundamental that prohibits serial marriage, theft, and the taking of life. Finally, with the remnants of Christian principle entirely gone, sentiment will rule completely. We will have forced sterilization to improve the breeding stock. Infanticide will be practiced openly as it was in the paganism of antiquity; then geronticide to relieve financial pressures; and then anyone may be killed when sentiment wills it. In time, there should be no longer any need to speak of compassion. Without the overriding ethical requirements that the creator and sustainer of the universe expressed in normative statements, all of that will make sense.” (Herbert Schlossberg, Idols for Destruction, pp. 86-87).
