Good Theology is Critical

“Theological decrepitude seems to be the inescapable accompaniment to, if not a major cause of, ecclesiastical debasement. The religious revival under King Josiah came after the pentateuchal writings were recovered; thus the idolatry that preceded it occurred without the theological underpinnings that the law could have provided. The vacuity of the social gospel, which considered ameliorative action a fair exchange for theological understanding, almost ensured that humanitarian activity would become a substitute for what was peculiarly Christian.” (Herbert Schlossberg, Idols for Destruction, p. 239).
